Doctor Who: Boom (2024)
I enjoyed this - a lot
Ok, we all saw the trailer, so knew what would kind happen to a degree, but this episode reminded me of when river song died(ish) in the library with D. T's dr, very similar vibes, but was really impressed with the visuals and story not to mention the acting is always top notch from Ruby/the Dr - I do have to say though, crying a lot will loose the meaning if you do it all the time and a number of occassions we have seen the dr breakdown and cry, brilliantly acted, but it is losing its affect, since done too often.
Apart from that, everythung else was on par with excellence and I like the little hints as to what Ruby or who Ruby is really, if I had a mad guess, could she be the daughter of the Rani who is (Anita Dobsons character due to the anagram in her name) - just a mad guess.....
Please...please give Ruby/Milllie more to do, she is sadly second fiddle to the Dr and maybe thats the point, but she seems to be far more capable of carrying scenes which would, give a good break to the Dr stealing every scene.
Nobody can discount the entertainment value here of the show and entertainment is what you pay for, it's not overly political (I wont use that word everybody blindly uses), yes there is a subtle and sometimes not so subtle messages, but certainly not commanded , yes it's transformed, yes it's very different, but it's not all bad and this is coming from a 51 year old guy who has watched almost every season of Dr Who.
One last thing, RTD in my view, was 'guided' into the sensibilities of the time, but he is now is being himself, writing with his whole self, not a censored previously self, so I dont see why people would think its a new RTD, just a previously restrained/curtailed RTD now allowed to show his full vision.
Doctor Who: The Devil's Chord (2024)
Was genuinely taken aback with the villian
Wow, for a tv show that has had a fair few situation that you think - nah the Dr wont get out of this one, I really did think the Dr was going to fail, since the Maestro is clearly a force to be reckoned with.
I initially didnt like the villian because was quite annoying, but as the episode went on, I began to see the villian hitting their stride and for all the paint by numbers of modern tv, it was seriously refereshing for this crazy villian to literally terrorise the Dr and the audience and I honestly kinda loved it...a villian with proper 'teeth' and real seething evil, god help the Dr,
I also have to gripe though, the Dr seemed to accept his fate - granted the villian nailed it, but the Dr has more resolve than this, but at least we see a vulnerablility here and its nit a bad thing.
I also loved Millie got ti steal the show, I was worried between two powerhouses of characters, she would be sidelined.
Lastly, id defo compare the Maestro to the perhaps the Daleks in fear, because there was a fear a genuine disconcerting element to this villian and well deserved, shame we didnt get to know more about where it came from and whether we have more similar 'god tier' viliians to come.
Well 'he who waits' must be the darkest comment made - maybe the Billy Bunter type is next, since his character was in the original show.... WHO KNOWS.
I also didnt miss the nod to the original William Hartnell - thanks Russell......thank you for acknowledging.
Doctor Who: Space Babies (2024)
Was entertaining and I guess thats the ticket
As a 51 year old guy who has watched Dr Who growing up, I've been a long haul fan, but wouldnt say a die hard,, so always willing to give something a chance and not comdeme without a fair go, I actually was quite entertained and had a bit of a chuckle when the babies started to talk, since not only do they talk, but have funny mannerisms to go along with their baby characters.
I was expecting to be lectured too, but although there were elements of this, it was done in a suitable way, rather than overly one way or another and I appreciated that since I pay for entertainment and got just that, I certainly dont wsnt to be insulted for any reason, since have people ever heard of dont bite the hand that feeds you ? - moving on from that though, I found the story pretty basic, but really fun and Ncuti is definately tha right person for the job. As for Milly, it's early days, but I really hope they give her some more screentime and good lines/story since she seems to be pushed aside somewhat because Ncuti is a powerhouse and overshadows her alot.
Potential tiny spolier ........ I did like the 'hint' as to Millie's DNA, since a little mystery is always good, but the mystery of 'mum and dad' I feel is not as tangible as a mysery regarding time lord lore or tardis lore, but we shall see.
Overall a nice episode that introduces, emtertains and thankfully doesnt preach and I'm all for that...going to let my daughter watch it and see her opinion, maybe she'll get hooked :) One last thing, Murray welcome back.
Resident Alien (2021)
very, very good
I initially thought, what is this ? But gradually became hooked.
Alan makes the show, his weird mannerisms absolutely capture what could be a believable Alien on earth trying to adapt amd learn about this foreign world.
So to sum up why the show is excellent:
1) Alan's performance as the lead character, he's spot on funny, likeable and most of all, written with true depth and passion and the latest episode, in character, he does something mind blowing that make me appreciate the writers depth of his arc in the show and brought me to tears and frankly redeemed one of the female characters that hasnt up until this point, been given the material she grately needed to act her heart out and made me cry because its such a heart wrenching scene and if it wasnt for Alan's romantic arc, the situation wouldnt be believable - I was really taken aback.
2) The police guy's one liners, he IS a comedy genuis, he is so so funny and I cant wait to see what comes out of his mouth everytime his scenes come up, absolute legend he is and the blonde deputy is a great foil for him, both are incredible actors.
3) Poor Darcy, the show doesnt know what to do with her, but shes a good actress, wasted in the role tbh, but she sometimes gets a little scenary to chew on
4) Max and his friend are excellent and Im glad to see she has come back to the show after leaving for a bit, they both add so much value to the show, love Alan's love hate relationship with them
5) The mayors character is boring, he tries comedy, but they should give him more serious stuff to do
6) Always nice to see Linda Hamilton in the show
7) Asta in the show is a good compliment to Alan's character, but again, it's like the show doesnt really know what to do with her, shes a fab actor, just the side story about her and her daughter doesnt kinda fit into the show, but Alan always steals every scene he's in, so maybe Asta would get some more scenes in the future - lets hope.
Fan Questions: 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' Fan Q&A (2024)
I just dont understand it
Why oh why did Jason make Phoebe into the most sadest character ever, when she clearly isnt like that in real life ? I understand that she mimicks Egon, but there is more depth to her in this interview than in the film, what a darn shame.
Likewise with Bill Murray, he seemed far more 'likeable' off filming, having a laugh and a joke.
I have seen the movie and tbh if they do another, just let the kids do the Ghostbusting and maybe keep the fire master in the new film and marshmellow men and Dan Ackaroyd since the kids more that covered their bases from an acting pov.
Lastly, why didnt uk cinema's have the merch, I wanted a 'trap' popcorn holder, uk is missing serious trick here, get the uk more merch!
One Piece (2023)
perfect, so entertaining..Netflix give me more seasons
Perfect, was quite entertaining. Great acting from all the cast, loved the optimisim of the show and interested to meet more pirates.
Loved the 'superhuman' part of the characters, too, thought it gave the show an edge.
Would happily pay a bit more for Netflix if they continued to bring out content like this, like the good old days of Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones and the like.
Loved Buggy, thought he was ace and Arlong was brilliant and conveyed the struggle of the fish men - but also the real message behind his character, which quite rightly should still stay in the minds of all people.
Its nice to produce something for the fans and not criticism them for once :)
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2023)
Hmm initially I was like whaaaaaasst
Spoliers ahead
So initially I was like, this is interesting, since I love time travel plots, but was even more interested when a certain person is met and the dynamic of the two was actually s breath of fresh air, no one way power dynamic, a nice gel of two people trust into a situation where they were equally taxed to come up with ideas to sleuth a situation and without giving too much away, we see the 'old guard captain' and the initial time traveller sent back in time and caught up in an attack, which covers the genesis of one of the best 'bad' guys in Star Trek rearing their head, not to mention a certain person dying.
The only part which I thought was a bit weird was the clone of the tva and tva plot dynamic, but as long as you haven't seen loki you wouldnt of seen the likeness.
Overall stunning acting especially from Noon-Singh and I cant mention 'the old guard' without blowing a massive spoiler....let's keep the momentum with this show, the equal power and screen time of characters and pure entertainment minus anything too preachy and I'll be happy to buy this box set hands down.
The Last of Us: When You're Lost in the Darkness (2023)
the suspense is palpable
Wow, I was really worried about the show with hearing from multiple 'wrong' youtubers stating its a 'you know what' fest and it goes to show how the ill informed can potentially ruin a fledgling franchise - so there is a lesson here, we all have our views, but unless you have watched the show, keep those opinions to yourself.
I knew Pedro was going to do his absolute best - he always does, but I was interested in Anna Torv's character and Ellie and tbh I initially hated Ellie since she came across as a lot of an ahole, but towards the end of the first episode, I saw her character softening and becoming more relatable - I'm glad this changed, since her being cocky all through the show would of been irritating.
I look forward to seeing some more episodes and I really hope 'you know what' stays out of the show and the show entertains, shocks and devestates it's viewers through good story telling, acting and music - you know, how entertainment used to be :)
Hunters: Van Glooten's Day 1972 Butter Sculptor of the Year (2023)
I would of given this 10/10 if you hadnt of changed the title music
Great acting, story and very suspenseful - one major issue I have though, is that the new theme music is far inferior than the first series, I absolutely loved the first series theme and now we have a pess impactful theme (in my person view) - it's not bad, just not as good in my view.
As for the story well without spoilers, it's suspenseful and keeps you guessing and the literny of characters is always good, the blonde hitman though is by far the best.
I look forward to further episodes, but do really miss the original theme, bit of a faux pass guys.
Thanks for a good start to an original show though :)
Kudos to all involved.
Wednesday (2022)
its entertaining and wednesday is a hoot
Its entertaining and has harry potter vibes, frankly entertaining, but there is still the odd comment and action by wednesday that feels out of place and more to do with current stances on this, now it's not overly in your face, but really, can you just entertain me and not lecture, since whoever still doesnt know how to conduct themselves in 'modern' social media world, isnt going to care and perhaps needs reminding, the general viewer who does care about how to treat people already knows how to treat people.
Apart from what I've 'splaned' the first few episodes were really interesting
and the the vibe, but it's moving more and more towards something else - only three episodes in so maybe the score will get higher.
Kudos to the team :)
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
I initially thought I didnt like it, but ended loving it
Well I really enjoyed the first episode, excellent acting, story and pacing, with some really standout moments of pure sadness. We can relate to the main vampire because of what he went through.
Great action scenes too.
Some people might think it's heavy on messages, but it isnt, it does convey historical unacceptable struggles , but so does every show in some respects, so the dhoe says ehat it needs to say since that is what happened, not to make the show a beacon, but to show what life was like in that era - doesnt detract from the indepth story of the struggles of a man that has had more timr on hid hands than mere mortals.
I enjoyed it as entertainment, since that is what it is, thankfully, not a springboard, but a story telling src.
The Imperfects: Sarkov's Children (2022)
well it started with promise
I initially enjoyed the first scenes, was quite interesting when they sre describing the fact the body has another etc, then we switch to a 'nightclub' singer and I just found that loud and irritating, since they slso subject the viewer to the pain of the super hearing and in small, dose, was ok, but this really did continue well intomthe episode and I just became as infuriating as it was to the character lol - we get it, loud noises
I kinda liked the lady with the overactive glands and people were falling in love with her, that was funny snd I really did feel a sense of dismay with juan and the fact he seems to have a really bad deal.
One major gripe, Alex - did the writers write the dharacter to come across as the most irritating, obnoxious cannot stand his voice, demeanor and actions....they succeeded, I nearly turned the episode off...sorry to the actor - since I'm sure they were doung what the script told them, but I fear I'll skip through their diaglogue next time, which might be a problem since its a main character - shame really - make him more relatable.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
amazon, its lovely, can tell the work thats gone into this
Forgetting about all the mess of the reviewers or panelists of supposed 'tolkien' scholars that have plagued the actual release of this show, the actual show is interesting and there is no doubt people have worked their hardest to portray a vision.
The cgi is perfect, acting perfect, nice to see all the characters and there were moments of suspense.
I'm not a tolkien scholar - so please forgive me, I'm just looking from the outside, in and it was entertaining.
Gladders seemed a tiny bit 'over confident' in everything she did, would of been nice to see her work towards her confidence like the actual battle where its all shown in red (unless that was in the second episode - I've not got that far), I thought the fact she was willing to leave people behind was disconcerting and had to be warned a few times to stop and help - that seemed to concrete what Gladders is all about, lets hope she shows some civility.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: The People vs. Emil Blonsky (2022)
a bit better, story was a split glued together by a sentence but better
Hi, I enjoyed this episode a bit more, the story of two halves kinda flowed a (little) bit better, but still abrupt edits took me a little out of the show briefly.
Taking the 'internet' feedback 'section' on positive/negative views section out of this review - which I think was a 'I dont care what you think' section, I thought the two stories were a laugh and the first showing of she hulk wasnt as good as the news report she hulk - that was really good.
One thing I thought was very strange, Jen taking her hands off the wheel in the car whilst talking to the camera - not sure what message you were sending to the audience regarding the safety of driving lol.
You might say - it's all not real - it's made up - fully agree, but there are still impressionable people in your audience.
And the episode just 'stopped' for credits, then men attacking she hulk to get her blood - which leads to the audience wondering who wants her blood.
I understand my views are irrelevant, doesn't mean they are right or wrong though.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Superhuman Law (2022)
well again, just getting into it and ... end
The running times of this show are terrible, did the writers run out of ideas ? On a positive note, it was a little more entertaining with a bit more going on and Tim Roth is a joy to watch as always.
It seems ironic though that she hulk would take nonsense.of her boss though, why do we spend a certain amount of time at the beginning of the show stating Jen wont take rubbish of anybody, then bow down to an ahole of a boss....doesnt make sense - at all.
I do like the she hulk and Jen counterparts and given more time to actually watch and ingest the show, it might be better, but it's difficult to get into a show thats a youtube short!
Kleo: Big Eden (2022)
quirky and strange, but good strange
This is a really strange show. Love the time period, action and atmosphere of the show and the lead actress is kinda really funny and deadpoolish at the same time.
The only thing i'd mention is that the dubbing of english is sooo hilarious - all the people talking proper english accents made me wee myself laughing, might be better I just read subtitles, but why restrict yourself from some of the most funny dubbing you will ever hear in a tv show.
So so funny, its a blast.
The Sandman: Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope (2022)
I enjoyed the cat bit more than the real life episode
I enjoyed the cat bit, because ot spoke to me and I could feel the mums pain when her babies were drowned, we often wonder what a kittens mum and dad think when their kids are taken away and this is it.
I once was present when my ex partner had her cat put down and the cat crawled up her shortly before the injection at the vets, he looked into her eyes, he knew he was about to die, thats sole destroying, so was this.
Prey (2022)
really enjoyed
Really enjoyed this film, Amber is great in it, I really liked her in Legion, so knew she could hold up the film - brilliant effects, good pacing and enjoyable scenes.
The Sandman: The Sound of Her Wings (2022)
this show is breathtaking
This show is breathtaking, the previous episode to this one was superb, going from an unknown premise of what would happen to a dark twist, but this episode had me in tears, there is a certain part in this episode that actually goes there, no holds barred, very raw and viceral which should shake every human on earth, not just parents...I never thought a tv show would do this, its done in such a beautiful way, that even the most hardened person should shed a tear.
Kudos to the team, just kudos.
Resident Evil: Welcome to New Raccoon City (2022)
what is this rubbish - its supposed to be horror
Ok, what the hell is this ? A teen drama or a serious horror genre piece - I've answered my own question, it's just a mess, trying to mix two genres and not dealing with either, well.
The 'teen drama' is filled with cliche and makes the two girls serious annoying - no disrespect to actors, the script is amazing bad.
The 'horror' element, the grown up survivor, was much more interesting and tbh what people, who, have played the game grew up expecting - not perfect, but better.
The teen element seems to take way more focus though - sorry but that is not resident evil.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
they keep nailing it - but I have to agree with some reviewers
Really excellent episode, they are really are telling rich stories that hark back to old trek and I'm really enjoying it.
I do feel for the main actor though in this episode, although he was great, he didnt carry it and for such an emotional blockbuster episode, I didnt feel he was totally right for it, but I do think he is a slow burner in character and given more and more to do, he can bring out his true arc
The episode did really entertain though and uhuru was fab as the 'baddie' she really lapped up the role, by far the most outstanding of them all, pike was so funny, he was just hilarious.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Spock Amok (2022)
goosebumps
Oh wow, the first few minutes pushed me straight back to the original series, the music, asthetics, action and the set must of taken ages to build.....love it, I hope all episodes re-use some ideas from original show, it makes me whole.
Hit-Monkey: Bright Lights, Big City (2021)
love the show apart from annoying ghost hitman
What is it about the over the top annoying ghost hitman, his voice is grating on my nerves, I fully understand hot monkey cant talk, but why couldnt you tone the ghost hitman down (a lot), ruins the show with constant ramblings.
Superman & Lois: The Inverse Method (2022)
hmmmm, you know its about Superman
I dont care about Lois's sister and the cult, perhaps we should actually expand on the reverse superman a bit more, like actually hearing him speak more, understand him more.
Hit-Monkey: Pilot (2021)
entertaining and not what you would expect on Disney
The pilot on Disney plus in the uk, was pretty entertaining and gives me hope of more graphic brutal live action, tbh I think this would of also been excellent as live action, not to say this show isnt animated perfectly.
Kudos to the creators, animators and voice actors, since I was glued to the screen from the start to the end.
Marvel, very daring, but definately the way as mando says.
