Italy’s TorinoFilmLab, the international film and TV series incubator linked to the Torino Film Festival, has unveiled the nine projects selected for its 2024 SeriesLab workshop dedicated to fostering production of innovative TV shows from around the world.
The projects, which are in the early development stage, hail from 13 different countries: Australia, Belgium, Croatia, Egypt, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States.
For the second year in a row, SeriesLab is being led by Hungarian screenwriter and former HBO Hungary development executive Eszter Angyalosy.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

The highly anticipated return of Ballet Hispanico to New York City’s City Center captivated audiences at its gala premiere on Thursday night. This season holds special significance, marking Eduardo Vilaro’s 15th year as the company’s artistic director.
One of the program’s highlights, excluding the Family Matinee, will be the world premiere of Vilaro’s latest creation, In Search of Juan, featured on all three performance days. The piece draws inspiration from the Metropolitan Museum’s notable exhibition, “Juan de Pareja, Afro-Hispanic Painter,” which occurred last spring and summer.
While Juan de Pareja is primarily recognized as the subject of Diego Velasquez’s renowned 1650 portrait, he was a skilled painter. The talented dancer Leonardo Brito is tasked with interpreting the life and legacy of this historical figure. Although he has been a New York City resident for the past eight years, Brito’s roots trace back to...

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”

As part of its ongoing mission to promote Latinx civil and human rights, the National Hispanic Media Coalition is releasing its first-ever media guide for storytellers in the entertainment industry.
“The media guide is an analysis for the entertainment industry to understand our community,” Nhmc president and CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the resource, which is available for free online, will be continually updated to reflect as the Latinx community evolves.
To wit: The guide opens with an explanation of Latino/a/x/e nomenclature, as well as their differentiation from the “Hispanic” identity. Nhmc’s guide uses mostly “Latinx” throughout because of its gender neutrality, but advises people to ask individuals their preferred descriptors.
The guide calls for fewer stereotypical depictions of Latinx characters – “cholos,” service roles, no or limited dialogue – and more that reflect the community’s expansive range: Latinx in science fiction and fantasy; multiracial,...

Selena Gomez has seen her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars and guest stars get nominated for and win Emmys the past two years while she sat on the sidelines. Will the third time finally be the charm? She’s currently in fifth place in the Best Comedy Actress odds. Given her previous snubs, you’d be justified to doubt her chances, but we’ve been through this before with a twice snubbed actress-singer who pulled through on her third try under very similar circumstances: Mandy Moore.
“This Is Us” was a breakout hit when it premiered in 2016 on NBC. In 2017, it earned 10 Emmy nominations for its freshman installment, including Best Drama Series and seven acting bids — but not for Moore in Best Drama Actress. It won two awards: Best Drama Actor for Sterling K. Brown, who prevailed over his TV dad Milo Ventimiglia, a surprise nominee, and Best Drama Guest Actor for Gerald McRaney,...

The Pose star plays a divorcing dad in Our Son, but he has other things on his mind – such as getting paid, why his James Baldwin biopic is like Barbie and trying to understand the Israel-Gaza conflict
Billy Porter is known for going big. The 54-year-old actor and singer routinely stole scenes as the drag ball emcee Pray Tell in FX’s drama Pose, a role that won him an Emmy. In Amazon’s 2021 update of Cinderella, he turned the fairy godmother into a fabulous, tough-talking fairy “godmuvva”, as he puts it. But his latest role, in the Bill Oliver-directed relationship drama Our Son, takes a different tack: as Gabriel, a relatively meek stay-at-home dad divorcing his husband, Nicky, (Luke Evans), Porter is required to play small, wounded and, sometimes, bitter, without any of the glitz or glam of his best known characters.

Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

A protestor interrupted Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards with a message to “Free Palestine,” and called for a “Ceasefire Now.”
A single protestor standing just outside the security barriers held a loudspeaker that was blaring a short, recorded message about Palestine on a continuous loop.
Attendees at the Indie Spirits, which are held outdoors in a tent on the beach at Santa Monica Pier, could hear the protestor from inside as the show was taking place. The message started being heard as presenter Jim Gaffigan took the stage to present an award to the cast of “Jury Duty.” The protestor could also be heard from the livestream of the show via IMDb TV and Film Independent’s YouTube channels.

When it comes to Ryan Murphy productions, you can always count on a glitzy cast, but the ensemble for Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans are especially so. But how did it all come together? “The process is sort of your map to creating this tapestry,” casting director Alexa L. Fogel tells TV Insider. “Ryan’s really good at casting. I think he’s very good at figuring out which projects he and I are good at doing together, what interests us together, and what kinds of things we excel at. And I think he’s been right every time.” Fogel has previously teamed with Murphy for Pose, The Prom, and The Politician, but this is her first time working on a season of Feud. One of the aspects of Capote Vs. The Swans that particularly appealed to Fogel was the fact that “this is a very East Coast story from a very particular age.

Pro-Palestinian Protestors Call Out ‘Genocide Joe’ Biden, Media, and ‘Silence’ of Sundance Attendees
Over 100 protestors gathered on Main Street during the Sundance Film Festival on January 21 to show solidarity for Palestine and protest Israel, U.S. president Joe Biden, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the media they see as complicit, and attendees of Sundance for remaining silent about Israel’s war inside the Gaza Strip.
The “Let Gaza Live” protest kicked off shortly before 1 p.m. Mt on Sunday, with demonstrators gathering at Kimball Junction bus station before marching on Main Street and settling just in front of the “Pizza and Noodle” restaurant. Glee alums Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz have revealed how the cast’s “bratty” behavior resulted in show co-creator Ryan Murphy refusing to come to set after the third season. Before he was known as the prolific producer-writer-director behind American Horror Story, Pose, American Crime Story, 9-1-1, Dahmer, and more, Murphy found one of his first major successes with Glee, the musical comedy-drama he co-created with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan that aired for six seasons on Fox between 2009 and 2015. However, the show was often the center of controversy and behind-the-scenes drama between its cast and crew. Things are said to have gotten so bad that Murphy walked out after a particularly tense shoot during the making of Season 3 – and didn’t return. McHale and Ushkowitz detailed what happened on a recent episode of their Glee-based podcast series, And That’s What You Really Missed. The pair, who played Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang,...

When Brad Falchuk moved into wife Gwyneth Paltrow’s house in 2019, there was plenty to consider. For starters, they each came to the relationship with two children from previous marriages. So, in reconfiguring the Goop founder’s longtime Brentwood pad for a family of six, Falchuk’s home office became a bit of an afterthought.

He adds, “I’d love to be surrounded by books, but I’m dyslexic anyway.”

Every so often, a series comes along that changes the game for the LGBTQ community and educates the masses about who we are and the discrimination we too often face. Whether a series brings Black transgender women to the forefront of the conversation like Pose or reminds young people and families that queer youth exist and deserve happiness like Heartstopper, we can all feel when a series has that perfect combination of a well-told story and a nuanced, accurate portrayal of LGBTQ people and issues.

Billy Porter wrote the song “Always Be My Man” before he even knew about the film “Our Son,” let alone knew he would star in it, too. The multi-talented performer had wanted to pen a piece with collaborators Joe Killington and Conor Reeves about “the complexity of a relationship,” especially because he was living through a moment in which he was “fighting” with his now ex-husband. When the script for Bill Oliver’s film came his way soon after, the actor felt “the song was the law of attraction for me to receive this moment.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The desire to write a song for a film in which he also stars is one Porter has felt for a very long time. “I’ve been doing movies since 1999. I’ve been trying to get a song in a movie that I’m in since then. I have been completely dismissed for decades,...

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. After revealing earlier this week that Emma Roberts intentionally misgendered her on the set of “American Horror Story: 1984″ — to which she later apologized for during a phone call — Ross is further disclosing Roberts’ behind-the-scenes behaviour and is now calling out powerful show creator, Ryan Murphy.
“There would be so much chaos going on because on a Ryan Murphy set, there is sure to be chaos.”
Opening up about a falling out with Murphy, the transgender actress told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview — published today — that she thought the controversial showrunner — whom she worked with on “Pose” and “AHS” — “was going to be my champion.”
“I thought he understood,” she said of diversity, especially since Murphy knows she’s an advocate for transgender rights.”

After a week of calling out “Pose” and “American Horror Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy, Angelica Ross has shared her salary and claimed that Murphy cursed her out after the production team “silenced her.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she also reiterates she is done with Hollywood and reveals she is moving to Georgia and going into politics.
The dispute with Murphy happened over a series of T-shirts a crew member was wearing. Ross described the shirts as “racist” and said they contained slogans such as “Build That Wall” and “I Don’t Kneel.”
One day while Ross was trying to focus on her scene, the shirts became too much for her. She left the scene, went into a production van and vowed she wasn’t going to come out until the man took off his shirt or turned it inside out. Producer John J. Gray later told...

Angelica Ross never needed Hollywood.
Long before she got famous on Pose — burning up the screen playing ballroom diva Candy Ferocity, who stole season three by starring in an episode set at her own funeral — she was already an accomplished activist and self-taught computer coder who founded TransTech Summit, which helps trans people find careers in tech. But Ross’ natural talents for acting took her far in Hollywood: After Pose, she transitioned to another Ryan Murphy production at FX, American Horror Story, where she held her own among vets like Emma Roberts and Billie Lourd in the slasher-themed 1984 season of the anthology series. But all was not copacetic, as Ross revealed this week in a flurry of X (formerly known as Twitter) posts and Instagram Live broadcasts.
Providing screengrabs of emails and detailed accounts of conversations, Ross, 42, says Murphy abruptly stopped communicating with her three years ago, during which no one in his company,...
