Few Grammy Awards were as memorable as the 57th annual event. That night, Sam Smith almost swept the general field, Kendrick Lamar won his first awards, and Sia delivered one of the most memorable Grammys performances of the 21st century. But most importantly, the 2015 ceremony was remembered for the last award presented, which would prove not only controversial but, to many people, an exemplification of certain problems with the recording academy that have only gotten worse since then. The night of the 57th Grammy Awards was defined by one big question: how did Beck beat Beyonce?
To understand Beck’s landmark win, we first have to take a short look into his previous work. Beck has been known for making eclectic yet mainstream alternative music. His debut album, the folk-driven “Golden Feelings,” didn’t receive much attention. It wasn’t until his third studio album, “Mellow Gold,” that Beck got...

Film at Lincoln Center on Tuesday revealed the slate for the Currents section of the 2021 New York Film Festival, a slate of cutting-edge and experimental works that showcase fresh voices in contemporary cinema. The section’s opening night film is “The Tsugua Diaries,” a pandemic-era tale that premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight about three housemates in lockdown from Maureen Fazendeiro and Miguel Gomes (“Arabian Nights”).
Currents includes 15 features, plus 36 shorts contained in eight programs, and represent 27 countries. In addition to the Portuguese “The Tsugua Diaries,” several films center around the pandemic. Shengze Zhu’s “A River Runs, Turns, Erases, Replaces,” is a meditation on Wuhan’s urban spaces before and after the outbreak, while Denis Côté’s “Social Hygiene” is an absurdist comedy in which characters exchange frank barbs from a humorous distance.
“Currents is the section of the festival that attests to cinema’s continued capacity for reinvention,” said Dennis Lim,...

Bully’s Alicia Bognanno credits the creation of her new record, Sugeregg, in part to finding proper treatment for her bipolar II disorder. “Being able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write about it,” she said in a release about the album, which deftly moves from moshpit rockers to contemplative slow-burners with an alacrity that that should put the whole “you have to suffer for your art” thing to rest.

When the Sword & Shield expansion set first arrived in English on February 7, 2020, it fundamentally changed the landscape of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Sword & Shield introduces Generation VIII Pokémon to the game for the first time ever while also bringing in exciting new Pokémon card types known as Pokémon V and Pokémon Vmax. All of this adds up to a set that features some of the most powerful and imposing cards printed yet. It also means that plenty of those powerful cards are prohibitively expensive to the average player.
Every seasoned Tcg player knows that the most economically efficient way to build a deck is to find and buy the card singles one needs rather than playing the booster pack lottery. Still, in a set as new and as high-powered as Sword & Shield even that can be cost prohibitive. The full-art version of...

Oliver Hudson and Malin Akerman have been cast in two of the lead roles in the CBS comedy pilot “The Three of Us,” Variety has learned.
The multi-camera comedy follows adult siblings who are children of divorce who must circle the wagons when their sister’s husband unexpectedly announces he wants to call it quits on their marriage.
Hudson will star as Will. Described as the worrier in the family, Will has always been protective of his little brother (not yet cast) and sister, Ally (Malin Akerman). Clever and perceptive, Will has a problematic need to help “father” everyone around him, so when his sister’s husband dumps her, his instincts kick in and moves her into his house.
Akerman’s Ally is said to be smart and resilient. She is the middle sibling to two brothers. She is thought of as the most “normal” and sensible one in the family,...
