Brian Helgeland was one of the writers working on a Game of Thrones spinoff that George R.R. Martin signed off on but one that HBO did not pick up.
In a new interview, Helgeland discusses why the tentatively titled 10,000 Ships series didn’t happen despite his saying his script “came out great.”
“I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse.
The Man on Fire and L.A Confidential writer says his script, “was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia. Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria. Her country gets ruined and her people are forced to live on the water, which...

Brian Helgeland’s illustrious Hollywood career includes winning an Oscar for writing “L.A Confidential,” directing Heath Ledger’s beloved 2001 comedy “A Knight’s Tale” and scripting films such as “Man on Fire” and “Mystic River.” It also could’ve included a “Game of Thrones” spinoff series had HBO moved forward on his pitch, which was titled “Ten Thousand Ships” and centered on Queen Nymeria.
“It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland recently told Inverse about his spinoff. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

Christopher Nolan is one of the great filmmakers of our time. Even if you’re not a full-on Nolan fanboy or girl, you have to admit his brand of mixing mind-bending narratives with a genuine reverence for the craft always yields compelling results: Be it historical drama, suspenseful mystery or colossal action-thriller, the man knows how to deliver a picture that gets the adrenaline and the brain working, and that’s a rare feat indeed nowadays.
But it all had to start somewhere, and while we’re not exactly going back to the very beginning, we’re going to highlight the movie that introduced Chris Nolan to the world and kickstarted his incredibly successful career. Don’t quite recall which movie we’re talking about? Don’t worry, we made a note of it – in fact, we’ve got plenty of notes scribbled down about it somewhere – so try your...

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey gets a thrill by preying on other men, a prosecutor told jurors during his sexual assault trial Friday in a London courtroom.
Spacey is “a man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable — a sexual bully,” Prosecutor Christine Agnew said in her opening statement. “His preferred method of assault is, it appears, to grab aggressively other men in the crotch.”
The four men who have accused Spacey of sexual assault did not know each other, but all “had the misfortune to attract” his attention, she said.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

The actor was dressed in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and pink tie as he was called by his full name and asked if he was Kevin Spacey Fowler.
“I am,” he said as he stood behind a window in the dock.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in sex activity without consent. He could face a prison sentence if convicted.
Spacey nodded and smiled at potential jurors as Justice Mark Wall told them that they may know Spacey by name or have seen his films.

LA Confidential author James Ellroy has ripped the acclaimed film adaptation to pieces.
The writer said he is now free to “disparage” the 1997 crime thriller following director Curtis Hanson’s death in 2016.
Ellroy acknowleged that the movie, which was a box office hit and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, is considered to be high quality by many, but he revealed he does not share these sentimenets.
In fact, he told Los Angeles Times he thinks “it’s turkey of the highest form”.
Ellroy also had harsh words for two of the film’s stars, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger, whose performances he called “impotent”.
Basinger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, which also won Best Screenplay for Hanson and Brian Helgeland.

Exclusive: Filming is to begin on May 8 in Toronto on David Cronenberg’s next movie, The Shrouds, which will star Vincent Cassel (La Haine), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Guy Pearce (Memento).
Kruger has replaced Léa Seydoux on the project (as first noted by blog World Of Reel). Cassel, star of Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, has been aboard since the project was first revealed last summer.
French icon Cassel will play Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife.

An online film enthusiast has pointed out a surprising link between two history-making Best Actress Oscar-winners.
Michelle Yeoh won her first Academy Award at Sunday night’s ceremony (12 March) for her performance in Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once – the evening’s top-scoring film.
In a historic moment, Yeoh’s success made her the first-ever Asian Best Actress winner.
You can find the full list of 2023 Oscars winners here.
Following Halle Berry’s Best Actress win in 2002 for Monster’s Ball, Yeoh is the second woman of colour to take home the trophy.
As well as sharing this feat, Yeoh and Berry also have another career feat in common – they’ve both been “Bond girls” in Pierce Brosnan Bond films.
Self-described “Oscars enthusiast” Brian Rowe tweeted images of the actors in character in the action franchise films, as well as them with their statuettes.

Guy Pearce has opened up about a “crash-and-burn” breakdown he suffered in 2001, and how a surprise phone call from Nick Cave helped him get his life back on track.
After his break-out role in Aussie soap Neighbours, which he starred in from 1986, Pearce was constantly in work throughout the Nineties, with roles in LA Confidential and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, to name a couple, before he made his most famous movie, 2000’s amnesia thriller Memento.
In a new interview inThe Times Magazine, Pearce discussed how, in 2001, he had a breakdown.
“A big crash and burn,” he said. “It was a confluence of things. The pressure I started to feel about working in America and the whole making hay while the sun shines philosophy. And of course, as an actor, you never usually work back-to-back unless, of course, you’re in a soap.

Welcome back to the Supporting Actress Smackdown.
In this monthly series we pick an Oscar vintage to explore through the lens of actressing at the edges. This episode takes us back 25 years to the landmark year of 1997 when Titanic and "Matt & Ben" were all rage.
The Nominees
Aside from an encore showing for comedic genius Joan Cusack, a surprise nominee in 1988 for Working Girl, the Academy went with all first-timers for 1997's Supporting Actress roster. Not that the actresses were "new" to the scene. There were two "comeback" narratives: Kim Basinger had been a leading lady for over a decade before LA Confidential but she'd taken a three year break from the movies (amidst multiple financial and legal troubles). Meanwhile Gloria Stuart who began in the early days of sound cinema was being celebrated in a way she hadn't been since 1932. The "breakthrough" nominations, were also two-fold. One went to Minnie Driver.

We're revisiting the 1997 film year in the lead up to the next Supporting Actress Smackdown. Here's Ben Miller on L.A Confidential
For my money, Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential is a bonafide masterpiece. Despite nine Oscar nominations and a Best Supporting Actress victory for Kim Basinger, the ample group of fine male actors missed any sort of accolades. It doesn't mean some of them didn't deserve it.
Here are my picks for the 10 best male performances from that film...

June didn't work out exactly as we planned but we delivered most of what we promised (sorry Eleanor Parker -- we'll try to make up for it in July) and it sure ended on a high note with Baz Luhrmann's Elvis.
Here are a dozen of the highlights in case you missed 'em...
• Halfway Mark the best performances and films of the year thus far
• Almost There Emily Blunt - she's a perennial at "almost" snagging an Oscar nod so Cláudio talked The Devil Wears Prada
• Judy Garland @ 100 we covered nine movies from ending with her final film I Could Go On Singing
• Best Shot Fire Island this one was fun to really look at... and not just for thirst reasons
• Ranking International Feature Oscar winners - Juan Carlos has seen them all
• Emma Thompson in Good Luck To You Leo Grande - what a performance!
• Jurassic World Dominion...

The USC Scripter Award, now in its 33rd year, honors films adapted from novels, short stories, comic books, journalism, and other screenplays with both the source material and the adapted screenplay feted. This year’s nominees include three of our five leading contenders for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — as well as seventh-ranked “First Cow” and the telefilm “Bad Education.”
The biggest snubs were “The Father” by Christopher Hampton, which ranks fourth by our odds, and “News of the World” by Paul Greengrass and Luke Davies, which ranks fifth.
The Scripter has forecast 14 of the eventual Oscar winners for Best Adapted Screenplay. Eight of those were in the past decade: “Call Me By Your Name” (2017) “Moonlight” (2016), “The Big Short” (2015), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “Argo” (2012), “The Descendants” (2011), and “The Social Network” (2010).

“Minyan,” an acclaimed tale of sexual and spiritual identity directed by Eric Steel, has sold to Strand Releasing in North America.
The film, starring stage breakout Samuel H. Levine of Broadway and the West End’s “The Inheritance,” played in the official selection at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win Outfest’s grand jury prize for U.S. narrative feature.
In Judaism, a minyan refers to the minimum amount of celebrants required for certain religious traditions. Set in 1980s Brighton Beach, the film follows a young Russian Jewish immigrant who is caught up in the tight constraints of his community. He develops a close friendship with his grandfather’s new neighbors — two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss. In the East Village, he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth,...

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Down Under actor Russell Crowe, who embodies road rage to terrifying effect in the first big movie to hit theaters in five months, “Unhinged.”
Bottom Line: Well past his movie-star prime, New Zealand-born Crowe, 56, is still chewing up screens in juicy character roles that show his range as an actor, from relentless Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper’s live musical “Les Miserables” (2012) to his Golden-Globe-winning turn as Fox News czar Roger Ailes in Showtime limited series “The Loudest Voice” (2019).
While Crowe is an exquisitely sensitive actor, his penchant for off-stage fisticuffs forged a bad-boy image that’s been hard to shake, merging with his most memorable action roles. “I am rage past the point of reason,” he promises in his promo clip, below. The risk...

At the 2001 Oscars, Russell Crowe took center stage at the Dolby Theater to accept best actor for “Gladiator,” using his speech to urge young viewers to follow their acting dreams. Now, Crowe tells Variety that his kids can look up the speech and realize that their father had something “relatively intelligent” to say.
“Gladiator,” a blockbuster hit where Crowe plays a Roman general sold into slavery, was physically taxing on the actor, who was then in his mid-30s. He narrowly escaped a tiger on set, stayed in tip-top shape working out at a makeshift gym on the outskirts of the Colosseum and rode a horse down a steep mountainside to give director Ridley Scott the perfect shot. He and Scott developed a collaborative friendship that would last for decades as the actor has worked with Scott on four more films: “Robin Hood,” “A Good Year,” “American Gangster” and “Body of Lies.

A far cry from the previous four movies that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have made together (the two men Voltron-ing into a single creative entity that will henceforth be referred to as “WahlBerg”), the hilariously titled “Spenser Confidential” is a high-testosterone action thriller about a red-blooded, blue-collared, perpetually open-mouthed American patriot who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys besmirch the good name of these United States. Just kidding — the only significant difference between this chaotic dreck and the likes of “Mile 22” is that “Spenser Confidential” is going straight to Netflix.
Beyond that — and maybe a surprising cameo from Post Malone — . By now, WahlBerg making a “funny” crime movie about an aggro ex-cop trying to sniff out corruption in South Boston is like if Wes Anderson made a “Succession”-esque screwball comedy about an inbred family jostling for control over a Bavarian tweed factory.

Actor James Cromwell celebrates his 80th birthday on January 27, 2020. The actor has had a highly successful 45-year career in television and film. He won an Emmy Award in 2013 for his supporting role in the limited series “American Horror Story” and was nominated for an Oscar in 1995 for his role in “Babe.”
Cromwell first came to the public’s attention for his appearance on the wildly popular “All in the Family” in which he played the recurring character of Stretch Cunningham, a co-worker Archie Bunker. It was only his second television acting job (after an appearance on “The Rockford Files”) and it launched him to a highly steady career in guest appearances on television shows and occasional small movie roles.
That all changed for Cromwell when he appeared in “Babe” an Australian film telling the story of an orphaned baby pig who is raised by the sheep dogs on the farm where he lives.

After their wins at last Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) continue to stroll toward Oscar glory. The SAG Awards has one of the best track records with the academy: SAG has only missed five times in Best Actor, seven times in Best Actress, nine times in Best Supporting Actor and eight times in Best Supporting Actress. Not too shabby. But despite so much overlap in the categories individually, SAG and Oscar do not link up 4/4 as often as you might assume.
In its 25-year history, SAG has only had a direct match in all four Oscar acting races seven times, most recently two years ago when the foursome of Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”), Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney became the first set of acting winners to sweep the four...

We examine how the Oscars have changed, and changed a lot, from the Harvey Weinstein effect to #OscarsSoWhite and an embrace of Joker.
Last week’s Oscar nominations came earlier than usual, but the surrounding noise remained the same: who got snubbed and who got slighted? Many of the headlines justifiably critiqued the sameness of the Academy’s favorite movies of the year. With Joker earning 11 nominations, and Once Upon… a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman each picking up 10 nods, violent movies about white men breaking bad took center stage.
However, the common complaint that the Oscars never change is misleading. While there are, for better and worse, certain types of drama and aesthetics the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences favors, the Academy has changed and changed again in the 21st century. One could even speculate the embrace of retro dude-bro movies is in...

Edward Norton‘s modern film noir “Motherless Brooklyn” is based on a 1999 novel, but it moves the action back to the 1950s, where a private eye (played by Norton) investigates deadly political corruption in New York City. The Oscars often gravitate toward period films, and that’s especially true in craft categories like Best Production Design where films are frequently rewarded for recreating architectural and design details of a bygone era. “Motherless” wouldn’t be the first film to earn a nomination in that category for transporting the audience back to the mid-20th century.
Perhaps the closest comparison for “Motherless Brooklyn” is to “L.A. Confidential,” the 1997 film that was also inspired by film noir and also recreated a 1950s urban setting: in that case Los Angeles as opposed to New York. “Confidential” was an Oscar contender across the board, earning nine nominations including Best Picture and winning for Kim Basinger...
