It's been a busy week for Paul Giamatti. Having just signed up to lead Eli Roth's upcoming Hostel TV adaptation, The Holdovers actor is now preparing to boldly go into the Star Trek Universe with Paramount+ spin-off series Starfleet Academy, which starts production later this summer. According to Deadline, Giamatti will take on the role of the first season's as-yet-unnamed villain, a man with an ominous past connected to one of the Academy's cadets.
Giamatti joins Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona) — whose casting as Starfleet Academy's chancellor was confirmed last month — in the series, which is being helmed by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Here's the show's official synopsis: "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships,...

When David Ellison’s Skydance made a play for Paramount last fall it was how and when (not if) Shari Redstone would tie the knot. Paramount and Skydance worked together. He valued the studio and its crown jewel of a backlot and planned to keep the company together. He was offering her a nice bundle of cash for her stake in National Amusements.
They talked, and talked, and talked. Potential suitor Warner Bros Discovery faded away, as did Byron Allen, who made an actual offer for the company. Par and Skydance entered an exclusive negotiating period for the month of April. When the lock-up ended with no deal, doubt crept in. Sony jumped into the mix. Yet the two sides continued talking intensely up through this past weekend.
But Redstone, whose family holding Nai controls about 80% of Paramount, always had the last word, and the last word was no. She...

Among some of the most desired and requested sequels in the gaming landscape, there’s no doubt that one game that sits high on many gamers’ wish lists is Fallout: New Vegas 2. Obsidian Entertainment’s approach with the IP is often said to be the most influential one in the post-apocalyptic RPG series.
Although we’ve been hearing rumors and possibilities of a sequel for ages, a few years ago, Todd Howard himself squashed all such possibilities. However, considering the massive influx the Fallout franchise is enjoying due to the success of the TV series, it’s time for Bethesda to finally give us a proper game after the disaster of Fallout 76.

In Alexander Payne's recent dramedy "The Holdovers," the Oscar-nominated Paul Giamatti played a grumpy (but charismatic) teacher, largely hated by the student body. It seems that the students of Starfleet Academy are about to hate him even more, as — according to a new report from Variety — the actor has been cast as the central villain of the upcoming "Starfleet Academy" TV series. The Variety report says that Giamatti will serve as an as-yet unnamed recurring antagonist throughout the "Star Trek" show's first season, and that his character will have "a sinister connection to the past of one of the (yet to be cast) cadets." Variety didn't specify if he'd be playing a human or another alien species.
Speculation may now commence. Will he be playing a bitter former professor? An escaped convict and serial killer who just happens to be the father of one of the main characters? A charismatic cult leader,...

Patrick Stewart has played an umpteen number of iconic characters in his long career. The actor is as versatile as one can be and is unafraid to take on roles that one might not necessarily see him in. His most popular role is undoubtedly his long run as Professor X in the Marvel Universe. The actor has played the character since the 2000s and most recently in 2022’s Doctor Strange 2.

In current times, inclusivity and representation have become a very important necessity in any workplace or industry. Charles Xavier famously moves with the help of a wheelchair as he is paralyzed below his waist. The 1984 summer movie season kicked off in May and early June with a flurry of blockbusters. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" opened to a gargantuan $25 million over Memorial Day weekend, and, unconcerned about getting chopped up in the mega-sequel's wake, Paramount scored a $17 million debut the following weekend with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." If you're thinking the studios might sit out a weekend while these films dominate the box office, Columbia and Warner Bros opted to throw a couple of haymakers over the June 8 three-day with, respectively, "Ghostbusters" and "Gremlins."
And then, on the fourth weekend of the summer movie season, Hollywood at last took a breather. With kids fresh out of school, the studios sat back and watched the aforementioned titles continue to flourish, while other pricey gambles (e.g. "Streets of Fire" and "Once Upon a Time in America") flopped.

"Star Trek: The Original Series" has three first episodes. Isn't this an irreconcilable contradiction? Let me explain.
There's the first produced "Star Trek" pilot, "The Cage," which starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. When the Enterprise visits planet Talos IV, Pike is abducted by telepathic aliens the Talosians. NBC passed, feeling "The Cage" was a subpar effort, but let creator Gene Roddenberry take a second stab at it.
That resulted in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." When the Enterprise tries and fails to pass an energy field at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy, crewman Gary Mitchell (Gary Lockwood) develops psychic powers and goes mad.
The only thing that carries over between the two pilots is Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is closer to the finished series (it does star William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk), but there are still noticeable differences.

On June 12, 1989, William Shatner made his directorial debut with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, a film often criticized over the years for its perceived cheesiness. Despite this, the movie brings forward some intriguing and notable points within the Star Trek franchise. Setting the Stage The movie opens with Captain Kirk climbing a mountain in Yosemite National Park, which eventually leads to him falling off and being rescued by Spock’s rocket boots. This scene sets the tone for what’s to come — a mixture of adventurous moments tied with surprisingly philosophical undertones. The Film’s Central Conflict The crux...

Having initially come as The Big Bang Theory’s prequel, Young Sheldon concluded its story by featuring Sheldon Cooper’s original actor Jim Parsons giving some subtle updates about how the things were going for his friends from the flagship series.

A "Star Trek" actor is jumping (star)ship to another major franchise, in a development that's sure to be of interest to DC superhero fans. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Sol Rodriguez, most well known for starring in several episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" season 2 as Doctor Teresa Ramirez during the storyline set in present-day Los Angeles, has been cast in season 2 of yet another streaming series. Rodriguez is reportedly set to join James Gunn's "Peacemaker" show, which is currently in the midst of production after taking a bit of a lengthy break as a result of Gunn's busy schedule and, of course, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that shut down the industry last year.
As for which character she'll be portraying? That's none other than fan-favorite DC icon Sasha Bordeaux, a figure so famous and popular that I've never actually heard of her until now.

Taking on the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Patrick Stewart has reprised his role in the numerous shows and movies within the franchise. Sir Patrick Stewart is a prolific actor with decades of experience on stage and on screen. The actor is known for his role as Professor X in Fox Studios’ X-Men films. He even reprised the role as a variant in the MCU’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, his most noted role is Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Patrick Stewart was more popular than Hugh Jackman when Bryan Singer approached him to play Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men. For Star Trek fans, he was the famous Captain Jean-Luc Picard from The Next Generation. Singer got to meet him on the set of 1997’s Conspiracy Theory, which X-Men executive producer Richard Donner directed. However, Stewart was reluctant to take on the role for one reason.

Mel Brooks entered even more prestigious awards territory on Sunday, upgrading his Egot to a Pegot as he was recognized with the Career Achievement Award at the 84th annual Peabody Awards.

The 1990s were a great time for television sci-fi. It was the heyday of Star Trek, with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all running in syndication. But, at the same time, another science fiction show, Babylon 5, pushed the envelope and arguably paved the way for loftier fare, such as the acclaimed Battlestar: Galactica reboot. What made Babylon 5 so special?
For one thing, it pioneered the idea of serialized television. Under the helm of J. Michael Straczynski, who dipped his toe into similar fare with the short-lived Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future (another Gone But Not Forgotten favourite), Babylon 5 was unique in that it told one continuous story over its five-season run. If you were a fan of the show, you really couldn’t afford to miss one episode, with so much continuity between each episode that the entry point for non-viewers was almost non-existent.

Few fictional characters conjure up as strong a mental image with just a mention of their name as the captains of the beloved "Star Trek" universe. Mention the word "Picard," and it's impossible not to think of Patrick Stewart's cerebral, near-Shakespearean leader, who oversaw years' worth of chaos and adventure in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and its sequel series. The name "Captain Kirk" conjures up images of William Shatner in full hammy hero mode, sitting in his captain's chair or in the middle of the action — wearing an artfully torn uniform.
Every "Trek" captain conjures up these strong associations, but "Star Trek: Voyager" nearly ran into a problem with its captain's name when it turned out the original option was already taken. According to the book "Captains' Logs Supplemental" by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, which was published during that show's '90s run, Kathryn Janeway almost had a different name: Elizabeth.

After playing the beloved MCU character Loki for over a decade, actor Tom Hiddleston is eyeing an antagonistic character in the extensive Star Wars saga. The actor has long been fan-cast as the young Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, in the epic space opera. Portrayed by Ian McDiarmid in the prequel trilogy, the character has been a key figure in all the trilogies.

When "Star Trek: Discovery" signed off last month, it left a few character arcs hanging. That's because the show's cancellation wasn't announced until season 5 had already wrapped, leading to a season finale that was reworked into a series finale with the help of quick rewrites and some additional footage.
Luckily, several main characters still got their happy ending despite the Paramount+ bait-and-switch, and Blu del Barrio's ensign Adira Tal was one of them. Adira joined the Discovery crew as an orphan with a Trill symbiont for a boyfriend. By season 5's ending, Adira had come into their own as a member of the crew, found a family in the form of parent figures Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), and amicably ended things with their partner, Gray (Ian Alexander), after he was separated from them and placed into a body of his own.

Even though it was a relatively low-budget TV show and visual effects in the 1960s were limited, Star Trek: The Original Series managed over the course of its three seasons to come up with some of the more decidedly weird alien races of the entire franchise.
While nowhere near as prolific in its production of monsters as its early ‘60s predecessor, The Outer Limits, which was mandated by its network to cough up a different boogeyman every week, Star Trek did turn out an interesting array of strange, creepy, or even psychedelic deep space denizens – although in classic Trek fashion, many of them were not the threats that their hideous surfaces hinted at, and were often more advanced than us humans in our bags of bone, flesh, and blood.
What makes this even more surprising is that the rest of this now-vast franchise didn’t push the notion of aliens...

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Way of the Warrior", Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) finds his station being overrun by Klingons. The Klingons claim to be there to defend DS9 from any potential Dominion threats, but it takes the form of harassing civilians and detaining passing ships against their will. Requiring some insight into the matter, Sisko sends for the only Klingon currently serving in Starfleet: Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) from "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Worf was at a major crossroads in his life. He was, until recently, serving as the chief security officer on the Enterprise-d, but that ship crashed (during the 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations"), and he wasn't sure what his career might look like moving forward. The Klingons wanted Worf to leave Starfleet and join the Klingon Empire, but Worf didn't like the Empire's new war tactics. Ultimately, Worf decided to stay in Starfleet,...

When Todd Howard, the mastermind behind Bethesda’s greatest hits, set out to create Starfield, he had a vision – steer clear of the usual sci-fi clichés.
In an interview, he explained how he wanted Starfield to stand apart from the polished, futuristic aesthetic typical of many sci-fi franchises, particularly Star Trek. Howard aimed to build a universe that felt lived-in and practical, very different from the sleek, pristine environments often seen in space operas.
The Difference Between Fallout and Starfield’s Aesthetic
Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion launches later this year.
Fallout is a goldmine of sci-fi tropes. Mutants roam the wasteland, survivors are camped up in underground vaults, and resources are very scarce. These elements create a gritty, harsh world that’s both captivating and familiar to fans of the genre. For Fallout 3 and 4, Howard and his team crafted a universe rich with history and detail, where every corner...

When it comes to the realm of open-world games, few studios compete against a mammoth like Bethesda. The makers of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Fallout games went through several concepts and brainstorming sessions before coming up with industry-shaking ideas.
However, Bethesda’s executive producer, Todd Howard, has never been silent about these processes. With an all-too-familiar charm and transparency, he has spoken about how a game as large as Skyrim can often distract players from the main quest, just like a creative process that may distract developers from building a finished product.

The Peabody Awards made its long-overdue Los Angeles debut at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday.
Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, the 84th annual awards ceremony recognized Mel Brooks, Quinta Brunson, Star Trek and more storytellers for its first time on the West Coast since it launched in 1940.
Brooks received the Career Achievement Award for breaking “ground through his use of comedy as a form of resistance” throughout his storied career, according to Peabody.
Brunson was honored with the Trailblazer Award for shining “a light on the challenges faced by public school teachers” through her ABC series Abbott Elementary, as well as opening “doors for the next generation of Black leaders in television.”
The Institutional Award went to Star Trek for the TV franchise’s “enduring dedication to storytelling that projects the best of humanity into the distant future” nearly 60 years after it first debuted.

Perhaps the most overlooked series in the "Star Trek" canon ("Short Treks" and "Very Short Treks" notwithstanding), "Star Trek: The Animated Series" may be accepted as the final two years in the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission. "Star Trek: Tas" debuted on September 8, 1973, four years after the cancelation of "Star Trek," to reunite the original cast and writers to explore Starlfeet's adventures in a 30-minute, animated format. The animation was provided by Filmation, the studio that had previously overseen multiple Batman and Superman cartoons, Archie cartoons, "Gilligan's Island" spinoffs, and which would go on to produce the ultra-popular "Fat Albert," "The Groovy Goolies," "BraveStarr," and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Filmation shows were popular among kids, but their animations tended to be stiff and inexpressive. The most prominent feature of "Star Trek: Tas" is how static it looks.

The mix of actors, showrunners, directors, costumers, production designers, composers, and VFX artists in attendance at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC event, produced in partnership with Paramount, reflected the unique blend of skillsets that have to come together to create a hit show. Artists from properties as varied as “Star Trek,” “Frasier,” and “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” to “Fellow Travelers,” “Colin from Accounts,” and “A Gentleman in Moscow” convened at The Grove in Los Angeles to discuss the painstaking process of delivering the most authentic possible shows to their audiences. And while no two stories were the same, everyone seemed to agree that great art happens at the intersection of extensive preparation and serendipitous timing. In James DeMonaco's 2013 dystopian horror movie "The Purge," Ethan Hawke plays a wealthy seller of high-tech home security systems. He lives in a bourgeois neighborhood and all his rich neighbors have outfitted their homes with Hawke's wares. They plan on employing their security soon, as tonight is Purge Night. In the future of "The Purge," one night a year is designated to be law-free. American citizens are legally permitted to commit whatever wanton acts of assault, destruction, and murder they want, from sundown to sunrise. Having purged their hostility, the idea is that they'll go back to being upstanding citizens in the morning.
The premise is tantalizing, although the 2013 original takes place mostly inside the Hawke character's home, turning a fun idea into a pretty rote home invasion thriller. The film was made for a scant $3 million but would earn over $91 million, making it a runaway hit. To date,...

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

"Star Trek" and "scary" aren't words that are often associated with each other. After all, it's a sci-fi franchise that's more about philosophy than action. "Trek" focuses on optimism and exploration, in a world where humanity has finally put internecine conflicts aside because we realized we are only one speck of a larger universe.
On the edge of the final frontier, though, all types of stories are possible. "Star Trek: The Original Series" began with "The Man Trap," essentially a monster B-movie in space about a salt-vampire with the mouth of a lamprey. In season 2, the series concocted a whole Halloween special with "Catspaw," about two psychic aliens who have constructed a Gothic castle as a trap for the Enterprise crew.
In the 60-ish years "Star Trek" has existed, it has returned to horror regularly enough to call this a trend. As the omnipotent trickster Q (John de Lancie) warned...

Patrick Stewart and the Star Trek franchise are not too far from each other. He played the character of Jean Luc Picard for seven long seasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994. Stewart then went on to feature in four more movies, and recently we also saw him return to the beloved role in the series, Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three more seasons from 2020 to 2023.

Alexandros Avranas' 2018 film "Dark Crimes," starring Jim Carrey, was extrapolated from a true crime article published in the New Yorker in 2008. The article, post-modernly called "True Crime," was written by David Grann, and it told the story of a Polish novelist named Krystian Bala who murdered a small business owner named Dariusz Janiszewski in the year 2000. For three years, the police were unable to solve the case, and Bala seemed to have gotten away with it. Bala, perhaps feeling smug about his ability to evade detection for so long, decided to poke the bear a little bit. In 2003, he published a crime novel called "Amok," wherein he wrote a fictionalized version of the Janiszewski murder, including intimate details that only the killer could have known. Bala depicted his fictional self as a badass nihilist who loved quoting Nietzsche and didn't care about human laws, man. "Amok" was a big hit,...

Long ago, in the distant 1960s, screenwriter Gene Roddenberry came up with the sci- fi series Star Trek, a story about explorers plowing through space and encountering all kinds of civilizations. In his utopian future, intelligent races did not fight each other, but engaged in science and diplomacy.
Okay, sometimes they fought, but mostly they explored space in its infinite variety. The series captured the geek community so much that it gradually became a franchise, with many prequels, sequels, and alternate versions.
In 2017, the franchise returned to the serial formula with a prequel, Star Trek: Discovery. The first seasons focused on the war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons, which ended before the events of the original series, but starting with the third season, the events are shifted to the next millennium, to the year 3188.

Nicholas Meyer's 1982 sci-fi flick "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was the first major acting gig for Kirstie Alley. Up to that point, Alley had only appeared on the sci-fi sitcom "Quark" as well as a few game shows like "Match Game." Alley wasn't even wholly devoted to acting at that stage, treating it more like a side-hustle than a career. It wouldn't be until she started auditioning for "Star Trek II" that she decided to focus on acting exclusively.
The circumstances surrounding Alley's audition are rather tragic, sadly. In the middle of the process, her mom was killed in a car accident and her father was left seriously injured. She stayed next to her father's bedside and Paramount, rather surprisingly, let her take all the time she needed. She spoke to her comatose father every day, telling him all about how she wanted to be an actor now,...

In genre television series fandom, there isn't a more reliable argument starter than "What is the best episode of X show?" Devotees of "Star Trek" The Original Series will fight to their dying breath defending the likes of "The City on the Edge of Forever," "The Enemy Within," and "Amok Time". As for the original "The Twilight Zone," it could be "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," "To Serve Man," or just about any other episode because the series had very few duds. And then, of course, there's "Airwolf." Where to start with "Airwolf?" The winning move is not to start, because we'll never stop!
This topic becomes especially fraught when you're dealing with a long-running show like "Bones." Hart Hanson's amiable forensics procedural driven by the romantic chemistry between Emily Deschanel's brainy Temperance "Bones" Brennan and David Boreanaz's impulsive FBI Agent...
